Costa Rica is a safe place for families?

Costa Rica is a safe place for families?

Costa Rica compared to other countries in Central America is very safe for families and children; having no army since 1948 makes us a friendly and safe country with a fairly stable economy.
Like any other country should always use common sense and take care of your things, especially in tourist places.

Below, you will see some tips to make your trip to Costa Rica with children safer:

. Do not wear valuable jewelry or gold that can draw attention to you. Have the same care with all valuables including cameras or electronic equipment.
. If you are carrying a small backpack with you while in the city, it is better to carry it in front of you and not on your back.
. To exchange money, only use banks or authorized exchange windows. You will need your passport for all bank transactions.
. Use the safety deposit box of your hotel for your valuables.

If renting a car:

. Buckling up is mandatory in Costa Rica even on roads with little traffic.
. If you stop anywhere along the way like a restaurant, commercial mall, supermarket, or lookout point, lock your doors and set the alarm.
. Do not pick up anyone hitch hiking. It could be a scam to steal your belongings. Never stop, especially along highways that are not busy or poorly lit.

If you go on a tour:

. When hiring the service of an agency or tour operator, ask them to send a written confirmation of services provided, a description of services, as well as their cancellation policy.
. Ask the agency or tour guide to carry a license accrediting them as a guide. In the event of complaints for services provided, write down the name and license number to file a complaint.
In restaurants:
.Verify that the prices on the menu include the taxes, which are 13% sales tax and an additional 10% for service.

If Surfing:

. Before going into the ocean, find out from the local people about pertinent beach updates like dangerous currents, weather conditions, waves, and type of ocean bed(sand or coral).
. Stay alert regarding ocean conditions since it is a dynamic and constantly changing environment.

If horseback riding:

. Wear long pants, durable shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent.

. The horse rental company must provide an experienced guide who is knowledgeable of the area and can offer the necessary instruction for those that are inexperienced in horseback riding.
. Make sure the company has the necessary safety measures and insurance in case of an accident.

If in the canopy :

. Make sure that the company has accident insurance and certified guides.
. Verify that the equipment, cables and platforms are in good condition.

If rafting and kayaking:

. The minimum age to do the tour is 8 years old; depending on the depth of the river, you may need to have experience and know how to swim.
. Tours should be given by experienced guides.
. Rafters must be provided with a helmet, life vest, and an oar.

If walking :

. Wear hiking boots, with tread.
. Bring a small knapsack with snacks and water. Dehydrated fruits or canned products are the best.
. If you need information regarding the trail, consult a professional tour guide or a local.
. Always stay on the marked trails and avoid touching or eating fruits, and tasting plants that you are unfamiliar with. Some of them could be poisonous.

In recent years the road system of Costa Rica has greatly improved, with labels and roads in good conditions, depending on the place you have decided to visit; for example: the road to Monteverde Cloud Forest is a gravel road for 30 kilometers (about 20 miles).

Some families rent a car and drive on their own while others seek an agency that provides services of a guide / driver, so parents can relax and have more time to spend with their children. Having a driver guide can provide you with more information of places and animals seen along the vacation.
